Anyone who has visited Nepal has been confronted with the sad reality of dogs living on the streets. While many of the dogs in Nepal have loving homes, there are a large percentage which go uncared for. They’ve never had vaccines or been to a vet. They haven’t been neutered/spayed, therefore, they reproduce which adds to the problem. Many locals feed the dogs what they can but can’t afford to pay for the veterinary care of a street dog. While most of the dogs seem to be getting on okay, there’s always that one that is in a horrible condition. You don’t want to just leave it there, but you also have no idea who to call. How do you conduct a dog rescue in Nepal?
This post is to help those who find themselves in this situation. If a dog seems to be doing okay, it’s likely the places that do exist won’t be able to take them in due to the overwhelming amount of strays. However, if you find a dog that really needs help and won’t survive on its own, these are the numbers to call.

They also have an animal hospice where dogs with terminal diseases receive treatment and can live comfortably until they pass away.

Facebook Messenger – Include a photo, location, and contact number
About the Organization:
The KAT Centre (Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre) is one of the most well-known organizations in Nepal. They are recognized by Humane Society International and have received several awards for their efforts. They neuter 150 dogs and 5 cats a month. They also respond to reports for sick or injured street dogs in Kathmandu. They pick the dogs up in their ambulance, treat them, and then return them to the same street once they are healed. They try to find homes for those that can’t be returned to the street.
In order to report an animal that needs to be rescued, the organization asks that you send a message on their Facebook page with a picture of the dog, the location, and your contact number. You can also send them an email (but email responses are slower than Facebook)

Animal Nepal
Where:
Patan (Lalitpur)
How to Report an Animal:
Call or send a Facebook Message to arrange a pick up of the injured animal.
About the Organization:
Animal Nepal has an interesting array of programs that they run from a Donkey Sanctuary to dog rescues. Their facilities can hold between 25-40 dogs at one time. Most of the dogs are treated and returned to the street once they are healthy. Those who cannot be returned to the street are put up for adoption until they can find the dogs a proper home. This includes puppies and dogs that can’t survive on the streets with their injuries. Animal Nepal was also kind enough to help me with our rescue foster dog when we were unable to get transport for him to the local vet, so they have a special place in my heart.

Want to do more to help?
All of the organizations listed in this post are run almost entirely on donations. If you would like to help a dog, you can help in a few ways. If you are in Kathmandu, you can volunteer at many of these shelters. If you would like to foster a dog, you can provide a home for a street dog until it is recovered and has a forever home lined up. I recommend working with Don’t Panic Nepali Dogs if you want to foster. You can also visit any of the organizations websites and make a monetary donation or sponsor an animal.

I’m so sorry to hear that Milan. I don’t know of any dog rescues in Butwal. I think the closest one would be HARO in Bharatpur, but that’s pretty far away. The only thing to do would be to hold onto the dog for some time until it is recovered enough to return to the street.

Hi. We are an animal rescue in Gulariya, Badirya, Nepal ( near the Indian border ) we are the only rescue / shelter in this area. Although we are a relatively new organization USA 501(c)3 we have been treating and rescuing animals here for more than 5 years. We just wanted to let people who need help for an animal in this region that they can contact us on 9863656555 or on our Facebook Soltis’ Hope Street Animal Rescue. There are not many resources for animals in this region and we hate to see an animal suffer because there is no help.

Hello,
Is there any rescue organization for street dogs in Dharan, Nepal or nearby. There are two female street dog’s in a very pathetic condition their private parts has big wounds I guess it’s STD. Any information or help would be much appreciated.
fulltimeexplorer
I’m sorry to say I don’t know of any rescues except the ones listed in this post. It sounds like they have TVT. If there is a vet nearby, maybe you can call to ask them if they know of any organizations that can help. Usually the vets know all of the groups in the area that help dogs. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Fundraising money takes a lot of work. I’d recommend talking to locals in your area who love animals. Show them what you are doing and see if they are willing to help. Maybe talk to your local government about support as well.
