Mermaids and sailors and pasties! Oh My! That about sums up my Saturday afternoon! So what is a Mermaid Parade you might ask? Well it’s a few different things rolled up into one. For starters, it is the nation’s largest art parade. It’s also a great way to bring tourism to an area that New Yorkers often forget to visit. The parade has been going on since 1983 and was started to bring mythology to life, raise self esteem, and encourage self expression. The real beauty of this parade is that it doesn’t discriminate. No one is left out and no one is targeted to participate. Only the close minded and naysayers are excluded. This is a parade of purely positive vibes.
Usually, I like my posts to be a little text heavy and full of information. This week, I’m going to let the text take the back seat, because if there’s one thing I learned from the mermaid parade… it’s to express ones self through art. I didn’t have the time to dedicate to a costume, so I’ll let my photographs be my form of self expression! I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them!
